Mr. Doug Burleigh received a B.S. degree in Physics and an M.S. degree in Applied Physics (Materials) from Penn State University. He has been working in the aerospace industry for over 30 years. He was a pioneer in the use of infrared thermography for nondestructive testing (NDT) of composites and has been involved in this application for over 25 years.
He has been the conference chairman six times for the annual Thermosense conference on Infrared Applications, sponsored by SPIE (Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers). He originated and serves annually as the Chairman of the NDT & Materials Evaluation session of the Thermosense conference. His work experience includes the development of NDT methods and development programs for General Dynamics Space Systems Division, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, TRW, NASA, USA (United Space Alliance), Goodrich Aerostructures and others.
Mr. Burleigh’s infrared work has included the NDT of composite and metal structures used on space launch vehicles (Atlas, Titan, Centaur, Space Shuttle and X-33), satellites, commercial airliners, private planes, helicopters, America’s Cup racing yachts and other boats, composite reinforcements applied to concrete civil structures, and oil pipelines. Doug is certified as Level 3 by ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing) in Thermal/Infrared inspection and has published over 50 technical papers.
