At the American Society of Photogrammetry annual meeting in Washington D.C. in 1977, Dr. Robert Madding was commiserating over beers (DuPont Circle Holiday Inn bar) with Drs. Alan Stevens and Tom Lillesand, all at the University of Wisconsin-Madison at that time, about the use and abuse of infrared technology in energy conservation. We decided complaining amongst ourselves served no useful purpose, so we decided to create a conference to shed light on the capabilities and limitations of IR technology for energy conservation. Thermosense was born. Dr. Lillesand came up with the name. The first two Thermosense Conferences focused heavily on buildings and energy conservation as we were in the middle of the energy "crisis" at the time.
Herb Kaplan was active in the Thermosense Conference since day one as well, as an author and also as the exhibits coordinator. As the second meeting concluded, the steering committee discussed the ASP's continuing emphasis on non-quantitative airborne thermal imaging, and agreed that Thermosense needed a broader venue. At the time Herb Kaplan was also exhibitor liaison with SPIE, and spoke with Sue Davis and then with Joe Yaver, SPIE's Executive Director. Joe made us an offer we couldn't refuse (the deal we still enjoy today) and ThermoSense III was held under the aegis of SPIE. As the energy crisis was almost "solved", Thermosense evolved into broader applications of IR sensing. SPIE has been able to support our relatively small conference through synergy with other larger conferences as one big Symposium called Aerosense.
